“Simpson's Law” and the Spectral Cancellation of Climate Feedbacks

چکیده
We spectrally resolve the conventional clear-sky temperature and water vapor feedbacks in an idealized single-column framework, show that well-known partial compensation of these is actually due to almost perfect cancellation spectral at wavenumbers where H2O optically thick. This a natural consequence “Simpson's Law”, which says emission temperatures do not change with surface warming if relative humidity (RH) fixed. provide explicit formulation validation Simpson's Law, furthermore this naturally incorporated alternative RH-based framework proposed by Held Shell (2012, https://doi.org/10.1175/jcli-d-11-00721.1) Ingram https://doi.org/10.1029/2011jd017221, 2013b, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00382-012-1294-3), thus bolstering case for switching from feedbacks. also find negligible lapse rate feedback, suggesting impact changing rates depends crucially on whether or specific held

Biosphere feedbacks and climate change
POLICY ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE IS INFORMED BY CLIMATE MODEL projections as described most recently in the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The models used are general circulation models (GCMs), which numerically represent the physical climate system in three dimensions, including the hydrological cycle. These are complemented by recently de...
متن کاملAtmospheric chemistry‐climate feedbacks
[1] We extend the theory of climate feedbacks to include atmospheric chemistry. A change in temperature caused by a radiative forcing will include, in general, a contribution from the chemical change that is fed back into the climate system; likewise, the change in atmospheric burdens caused by a chemical forcing will include a contribution from the associated climate change that is fed back in...
متن کاملThe remote impacts of climate feedbacks on regional climate predictability
Uncertainty in the spatial pattern of climate change is dominated by divergent predictions among climate models. Model di erences are closely linked to their representation of climate feedbacks, that is, the additional radiative fluxes that are caused by changes in clouds, water vapour, surface albedo, and other factors, in response to an external climate forcing. Progress in constraining this ...
